We Are Your Friends, a new film set in the electronic dance music (EDM) scene starring Zac Efron, has suffered a disappointing opening weekend in the US.

In the film, Efron plays an aspiring DJ trying to make it in the EDM world, attracting the attention of an older, more established DJ (Interstellar's Wes Bentley), who becomes his mentor. However, when Efron falls for his mentor's girlfriend (Emily Ratajkowski, who starred in Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' video), he is forced to make some difficult decisions.

Named after Justice vs. Simian's 2006 dance hit 'We Are Your Friends', the film features cameo appearances from real-life EDM DJs Alesso, Dillon Francis, Nicky Romero and Them Jeans.

According to Billboard, the film has brought in $1.8 million (£1.1 million) since its release on Friday (August 28), the worst opening weekend for a major film playing in more than 2,000 movie theatres. It had a budget of $6 million (£3.9 million).

Warner Bros' Jeff Goldstein said of the news, "This was a passion project for Zac Efron, and we believe in him. Yes, the result was disappointing, but this was a small film."

We Are Your Friends was co-written and directed by Max Joseph, the "cameraman" from Catfish: The TV Show, in his feature film directorial debut.
